Users Manual
A practical Manual for Students and Teachers
We encourage active study and exploration of all the resources in the library. Our mission is to support the curriculum of Westhill Institute. We attempt to provide access to current, adequate and appropriate information resources, and to ensure that all students, teachers and staff members are effective users of ideas and information. The library includes Reference, Non-Fiction, Fiction Collections, Periodicals and Data Bases, a video and audiovisual area, and computer resources. If you need help please ask. Please respect the needs of others and follow the rules below.

GENERAL COLLECTION
The Media Book Center has a collection of books and other materials on a wide variety of subjects. The collection is designed to support the classroom curriculum individual research needs and recreational reading interest. The print collection includes reference, non-fiction and fiction works.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCE
The Media Book Center has a collection via Internet of Data Bases on a wide variety of subjects, the users has access via password, and they research in the Data Bases in the school or in their homes.

SERVICES
What we do for you:

  • Provide instruction and help in the use of library information, and equipment.
  • provide a quiet, attractive, and friendly place for study.
  • Provide help and resources for assignments and personal information needs.
  • Provide recreational books, information and materials.
  • Purchase books, materials, and equipment to support educational goals.
 

Library Hours Monday - Friday 7:45 a.m. – 16:00 p.m.

CIRCULATION

Students can check out materials and use computers. Books from the general collection are circulated for two weeks period. Reserved books, are circulated overnight. Students are limited to three (3) books on any given subject. Reference books and magazines are circulated only in the Media Center.

Staff Teachers are encouraged to use the Media Center for research purposes and to check out as many materials as needed for personal and classroom use. Books, videos, and other materials circulate on a long term loan. Reference books and periodicals may also be checked out, but only overnight. If necessary, the loan period may be extended for curriculum support purposes. In order to maximize circulation, it is requested that materials be returned promptly after use.

Locating Books To locate books, use the online catalog to search for a book by author, title, subject or call number. Signs throughout the Media Center identify the various areas of the Dewey Classification System.

Dewey Decimal Classification System The books in our library are arranged on the shelves by the Dewey Decimal System.

Access: Media Center Visits The Media Center allows for both flexible and scheduled access. Students may visit the Media Center throughout the day, before school, after school and during lunch. Students may complete class assignments, conduct research using the various data bases and the print collection, check out materials, browse the magazine collection, or read for pleasure. Students must present a hall pass when they com from a class. No passes are required before school, during lunch or after school. No food or drink is permitted in the Media Center.

Recreational Reading In addition to monthly promotions, displays and special programs, the Media Center promotes and provides a variety of opportunities for students and staff to read just for the fun of it!

Fines Students must pay a 1 peso fine per day, excluding holidays and weekends, for overdue materials from the general collection.

Rules: What you can do to make this a better place for everyone.

  • Speak quietly and behave in a manner consistent with study.
  • During class time you must have a pass to use the library.
  • Do not bring food, candy or drinks into the library.
  • Pass through the entryway in an orderly manner and lower your voice.
  • All items taken from the library must be checked out.

Procedures to keep our library running smoothly

  • Regular book checkout period is two weeks. Exception: reference book are for overnight by permission after last period and returned before 8:00 a.m. the following day.
  • If you have an overdue book you cannot check out any library materials.
  • Students will not receive school documentation until fines are paid or overdue materials returned.
  • There is one peso daily fine for all overdue material.
  • You may have a total of three items checked out at the same time.
  • All lost items must be paid for by covering replacement costs, service charge and fines.
  • Please allow time to check-out books. If you wait until the last minute you may be late for class.

Professional Collection A collection of books, periodicals, and non-print items dealing with curriculum and professional issues is housed in the media center. Teachers are encouraged to check out these items at any time.

AVAILABLE SERVICES

Instruction:

  • Collaborative planning: Class visits may be scheduled with the librarians. The teacher and the librarian will meet and collaboratively plan the activity prior to the visit.
  • Special Programs / Events: May be scheduled in the Media Center. The sponsor of the activity is responsible for setting up, cleaning up and restoring the Media Center to its original configuration.

Citing Internet Resources

  1. List the author´s name, if it is given.
  2. List the title of the page.
  3. List the URL
  4. Indicate the date you visited the page (Web pages often do not list the date they were created or updated, so this is a way of indicating how current the information may be).
  5. For more specific information, refer to online style guide for citing electronic sources.
